Committed to a solution-based approach, no project is too big or too small for this innovative team. Through smart thinking and listening to their clients, J.E. Dennison has expanded and diversified into Dennison Joinery, K2 Doors, The Door Factory and Designer Surface.

Specialising in the construction and installation of custom-made joinery, from kitchens to stairwells, Dennison Joinery is where the business began. In 1998, The Door Factory was created to meet the growing demand for specialist doors, covering domestic, commercial and fire doors. Next was the launch of K2 Doors, producing doors for the industrial hygiene sector. Finally, Designer Surface was added to the business, fabricating and fitting benchtops and tiling.

It was after Gary had a quadruple heart bypass in 1997 that the company branched out into the hygiene door market. While Jill was running the business and Gary was recovering from his operation, he was approached to supply a door that would comply with the high level of hygiene needed in the dairy processing plant at Edendale. Demonstrating the can-do approach at the heart of the company, Gary set upon the task of designing and manufacturing hygienic doors from his La-Z-Boy chair – and his shed. Edendale was followed by a contract at Te Rapa dairy plant for 100 doors, and K2 Doors began to grow. The expansion of K2 Doors ultimately necessitated a move to larger premises at 5 Redruth Street, Timaru.

The third generation in the family business – Brad, Tim and Renee – wouldn’t be where they are today if it wasn’t for their late grandfather, James Evans Dennison, and his wife, June, who started the company back in 1966 at 3 York Street, Timaru. Gary followed his father into the joinery business and eventually he and Jill Dennison took over. Brad, Tim and Renee all bring their own individual skillsets, working alongside Jill and Gary to manage the various divisions.

The family acknowledges the expertise and commitment of their staff (some of whom have been with them for more than 20 years) as an important factor in the success and growth of the business. The team, along with the support of their own partners and families, has made J.E. Dennison what it is today.

With a third generation now making its contribution, J.E. Dennison continues its legacy as an innovative and solution-based company, with an added focus on greener ways of thinking and a goal of making the company as sustainable as possible for the next generation.
